The Old Crocodile and the Villagers

Once upon a time, there was a village situated on the bank of a river. The river was the sole source of water for the villagers. However, they faced a terrible predicament: every day, they had to sacrifice a young boy to a monstrous crocodile in exchange for the water. This brutal ritual had been going on for so long that it forced the villagers to either have more baby boys to sustain the community or consider moving away. Yet, relocating was nearly impossible due to a scarcity of land and fierce conflicts with neighboring villages.

One day, a group of courageous young men secretly devised a plan to end the crocodile’s reign of terror and save future generations from this grim fate. Without informing the village elders, who might have had wiser ideas regarding such a decision, they selected two brave boys to embark on a dangerous mission to kill the crocodile at dawn.

The next morning, before the first light of day, when the crocodile usually received its daily sacrifice, the young heroes put their plan into action. They confronted the beast and, after a fierce battle, successfully killed the old crocodile. Triumphant, they returned to the village, proudly displaying the crocodile’s body for all to see.

This victory sparked celebrations throughout the village and even in neighboring villages. Villagers offered food and drinks for free, boys and girls congratulated each other, and the mission plotters and executors were praised publicly with songs and dances. That night, the villagers went to bed hoping the worst times had ended and a bright future had begun.

The next morning, when the villagers went to fetch water from the river, they encountered ten younger crocodiles in the water, all seeking the same: one young boy as a sacrifice. Villagers were shocked and dismayed. They all asked in unison, “Where did you all come from?” The crocodiles responded that they had been there all along but feared the old crocodile who had now been killed, thanks to your brave young boys.

The elders of the village summoned an immediate meeting to discuss what to do next, as the situation had worsened. Some blamed the young boys who had not consulted with them before taking out the old crocodile. Others discussed the idea of moving away from the village and reconciling with other villages by lowering their standards, swallowing their pride, and forgetting past conflicts.

As the debate raged on, it became clear that the villagers were at a crossroads. The bold actions of the young men had unintended consequences, highlighting the complexities of their predicament. The community had to weigh the costs of their current situation against the potential risks and benefits of seeking peace with their neighbors or finding a new home.

In the end, the villagers learned a valuable lesson about the importance of collective decision-making and the unforeseen ramifications of even the most well-intentioned actions. The future of the village remained uncertain, but they knew that, together, they would have to find a way to overcome their challenges and ensure the survival and prosperity of their community.
